Hello, friends! As many may already know, HOLA Lakeway has been awarded a second grant from Conexión Américas to continue and expand its works in Hamblen County and the Lakeway area this year. Just Like last year, HOLA's English course for adults is already in full swing as of September, and its Spanish classes will be starting up soon as well. However, this year, HOLA is gearing up for the beginning of two new programs: The Elevate Afterschool Program and the Newcomer Resource Fair.

El Saludo

¡HOLA, amigos!

Elevate Afterschool Program

HOLA is currently preparing for the beginning of a new after school program called Elevate in collaboration with East High School and West High School. HOLA's program coordinator, Jessica Bailiff-Noe, is a teacher at West and sees firsthand the need that ELL students have for extra support, especially considering the frequent influxes of newcomer students that the school district experiences. The Elevate Afterschool Program aims not only to give students extra homework help but to conduct regular check-ins with students' teachers to track their progress in class, arrange for extracurricular activities that introduce students to post-secondary options, and hold workshops in which visitors come in to teach students essential real-world skills. The program will be open to students of both West High School and East High School and will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 PM. HOLA is excited to start addressing the issues that ELL students in our district face and hopes to make an impact in their lives through this program. If you or someone you know would like to volunteer as a tutor in this program, please reach out to us at or on our Facebook page!

Newcomer Resource Fair

HOLA's first ever Newcomer Resource Fair is being planned for the beginning of December. While the specifics are still being worked out, the premise of this event is to bring vital information and community resources to newcomer immigrant families of Hamblen County and the Lakeway area by having local companies and organizations gather in one place to share how their services can help families or why their services are necessary. By giving families a basis of knowledge through introducing them to community resources, HOLA hopes that the immigrant families in attendance will walk away with more knowledge about the resources available to them and with connections that will help them secure bright futures. HOLA is excited for this program and hopes that you will keep an eye out for more updates!

Hello HOLA Lakeway Family!

We hope that your 2019 has started off on the right foot and that our first newsletter of the year finds you well! 2018 was a groundbreaking year for HOLA Lakeway, and we find ourselves more energized than ever in this new year! We are determined to follow up all of our success from last year with even greater things, and already HOLA has made moves this year to further its mission of creating a more unified community for the Lakeway Area, the biggest of those being the creation of a Conversational Spanish Course for our surrounding community. Along with further details regarding this course, as well as our usual Community Organization Highlight and Upcoming Events sections, we’ll also be covering the MLK Day award that HOLA Lakeway received in January and an important development in Walter’s State Community College’s RHiTA program! We’re so happy that you’re keeping up with all things HOLA and look forward to continuing to keep you all, our family, updated on everything we do this year!

MLK Day Award

On this past MLK Day, the Morristown Task Force on Diversity honored HOLA Lakeway with the MLK Service and Advocacy Award at their 10th Annual MLK Day breakfast at First United Methodist Church.

HOLA was honored primarily for its response to the Grainger County slaughterhouse raid in April of last year, having provided financial assistance and legal counsel to the affected families, but also for the important strides we have made for the immigrant communities of Hamblen County and the Lakeway Area through our language classes. We are so privileged to have our hard work recognized in this way and look forward to continuing advocating for and empowering immigrant communities in our area throughout the rest of 2019!
